A network for nature in South Denmark
25 January 2008, Kolding, Denmark Passion for biodiversity starts early in South Denmark: Dozens of children from the region joined the ceremony where their mayors committed to help halting the loss of biodiversity by 2010. Both signed the Countdown 2010 declaration declaration together as a symbol for the need to engage all in the efforts to save biodiversity and to keep future generations in mind when planning the use of natural resources.
Sixteen municipalities from Aabenraa to Vejle joined Countdown 2010 with concrete projects to conserve nature in their surroundings. Together, they will implement a nature-network enhance the connections between ecosystems and its species, improve the quality of nature in urban surroundings and increase public access to nature for recreational purposes.
Sebastian Klein, a popular Danish actor for children, supported the event with a sketch on environmental issues in a child friendly format. Sebastian Winkler, Head of Countdown 2010, was very pleased to collect the 17 Declarations. The Countdown 2010 team is now looking forward to working with the municipalities to reach the 2010 biodiversity target.
The event was successfully organized by the Region of Southern Denmark with the support of the Countdown 2010 Secretariat. Eva Juul Jensen, Senior International Advisor, Danish Forest and Nature Agency expressed the support of the Ministry for such local and regional initiatives.
