A positive future for the Intergroup on Climate Change, Biodiversity and Sustainable Development

2 December 2009, Brussels. Yesterday, as the Lisbon Treaty came into effect, the European Parliament Intergroup on Climate Change, Biodiversity and Sustainable Development received the necessary support by the parties to be approved as one of the Intergroups int he European Parliament. Three political groups have now officially given their support to the Intergroup, including the European Peoples Party (EPP), the Alliance for Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) and the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) – the decision will be finalised on 10 December.

IUCN and its Countdown 2010 initiative have a long standing agreement (since 1994) with the European Bureau for Conservation and Development (EBCD) and the European Parliament in providing the Secretariat for the Intergroup on Climate Change, Biodiversity and Sustainable Development.

The Director General of IUCN, Julia Marton-Lefevre, visiting Brussels to attend the Conference “European Biodiversity – The Private Sector Offer” and the official launch of the CEMEX Conservation book The Wealth of Nature both happening at the European Parliament, re-iterated that IUCN stands ready to support the Intergroup over the coming years.
