Action Plans to safeguard 44 species published
19 February 2008, Genk, Limburg. 44 Belgian municipalities signed the Countdown 2010 Declaration today as part of the project “Gemeenten adopteren limburgse soorten”. In June 2006, all towns and villages had picked to adopt one endangered species of the region. From badgers to owls and butterflies, each has now approved a detailed action plan for the preservation of their animal or plant and its surroundings.
Led by the province of Limburg and the regional landscape associations, the aim of the project is to encourage municipalities to take responsibility for their biodiversity. By adopting one specific endangered species, the municipality takes action to protect this species and raise public awareness about biodiversity and endangered species in the province.
The action plans cover conservation and education action. Municipalities will dig pools and plant hedges, organize educational walks, name streets after their species or commission art projects.
