Add your voice towards defining the post 2010 target
22 October 2008, Brussels. Until 31 December 2008 the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) will accept proposals for the review of its Strategic Plan and the Biodiversity Target. The current Strategic Plan – started in 2002 – will expire in 2010 when a new one will be adopted at the 10th Conference of the Parties to the CBD in Nagoya (Japan) in October of the same year.
The outcome of the 10th Conference of the Parties will be essential for the future of the biodiversity target. The international community – as clearly stated at IUCN World Conservation Congress – seems to agree that a new target for biodiversity is necessary after 2010. Yet, a more measurable target is what most aspire to. The decision will understandably have a huge impact on the post 2010 related agenda.
The CBD Secretariat encourages the Parties to the Convention and observers to provide input and suggestions for the review. A synthesis document will be drawn up by the Executive Secretary which will include the relevant submissions, fourth national reports prepared by governments, in-depth reviews of the programmes of work of the Convention, the findings of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment and other material. This synthesis will be online in early 2009.
