Antwerp and Bremen join the Countdown 2010 network
More than 60 of the 70 municipalities in the Province of Antwerp (northern Belgium) have committed to working together on the biodiversity campaign.
Jos Geuens, member of the provincial council, signed the Countdown 2010 Declaration and launched the biodiversity campaign in the province. He explained that the focus of the campaign will be concentrated on river and brook valleys as important natural corridors. Work will be carried out in close collaboration with the municipalities.
“The campaign aims to put in place some effective measures to restore habitats for our fauna,” said Mr. Geuens, “it’s not only plans or “paper protection”.”
A travelling exhibit (in the photo) will attract attention to this Countdown 2010 campaign.
A few days later, it was the city of Bremen, Germany, to sign the Countdown 2010 Declaration. Senator Dr. Reinhard Loske represented the city and Mr. Tamas Marghescu represented IUCN.
In his speech, the Senator noted that city of Bremen is actively engaged in the implementation of the Habitat Directive, in particular in the areas of monitoring and particular species protection programs.
Senator also underlined the importance of municipalities taking a proactive role in achieving the 2010 target.
The Senator commented that by signing the Countdown 2010 Declaration, the city of Bremen aims to send a signal and to invite other municipalities to engage as well.
