Concrete commitments: UEPG joins Countdown 2010

2 May 2007, Brussels, Belgium. Concrete, sand and gravel – the European Aggregates Association UEPG likes many colours. In joining Countdown 2010 at the UEPG Sustainable Development and Quarry Awards Ceremony, the industry association is starting a process to promote biodiversity and to green the operations of its member companies.

Quarries and gravel pits are large, temporary interventions in natural systems. While the extraction process will always impact on biodiversity, appropriate offsets, accompanying measures closure practices can ensure a minimal or even a net positive impact.

In their Countdown 2010 declaration, the European Aggregates Association has promised to work with their 13.500 member companies and 28.000 sites to develop a biodiversity policy for the aggregates sector, work towards net positive impact of their operations. In addition, the organization confirmed their strong commitment to the framework of Natura 2000.
