European biodiversity in a global context
25 June 2010, Brussels. Building on recent policy developments aiming to address the current biodiversity crisis, the Intergroup on Climate Change, Biodiversity and Sustainable Development will host an event at the European Parliament. The event will debate European biodiversity challenges in a global context looking at Europe’s unique flora and fauna, habitats, ecosystems and the threats and pressures there are facing.
The conference will discuss the EU position in the context of international negotiations on biodiversity. Paving the way to Nagoya, European targets and mechanisms to support biodiversity knowledge, monitoring and assessment will be presented in light of the recent adoption of the IPPC-like mechanism for biodiversity: the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES).
The next Conference of the Parties of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP10) will take place in Japan in October and is expected to adopt a new Post-2010 Strategic Plan aiming to halt the ongoing degradation of ecosystems and loss of biodiversity, and make efforts to restore them.
On the road to COP10 in Nagoya, international consultations have taken place to discuss the review of the Strategic Plan for the next decade. These included reflections on new biodiversity targets and sub-targets, on assessment indicators and implementation plans.
