First local authorities in France to join Countdown 2010

21 January 2009, Paris (France). 13 municipalities in the Ile-de-France Region are the first local governments to sign the Countdown 2010 Declaration in France. Yesterday, Sebastian Winkler attended the signing ceremony organized by Natureparif – the first agency in Europe exclusively dealing with biodiversity conservation at regional level. “Countdown 2010 is delighted to see how the commitment towards the 2010 target is slowly gaining ground at every level of government in France” commented Sebastian. “We hope that many other countries and regions will follow suit to encourage their municipalities to join”.

Jean-Vincent Placé, President of Natureparif, praised the engagement of the municipalities and expressed his hope that more will follow their example. He also pointed out that winning the fight against biodiversity loss requires everybody’s talent and contribution.

The Region of Ile-de-France has a longstanding relationship with the Countdown 2010 network, being the first region in Europe to sign the Declaration in 2006. The Seine Saint-Denis department also joined the network in 2007.

The event had good media coverage and you will find an article on Countdown 2010 in the “Metro” newspaper. Sebastian Winkler explained why biodiversity is important for human life and what people could do to save it.
