Green new deal for sustainable food chains

Green new deal for sustainable food chains

15 April 2010. The EU Group of IFOAM is organizing the 3rd European Organic Congress in Madrid on 7 June 2010. The event will focus on the strategic role of the organic food sector in promoting efficient use of natural resources and sustainable jobs in rural areas.

Biodiversity loss and climate change are among urgent environmental challenges requiring immediate attention across multiple policy fields. Agriculture needs to play its part in the mitigation of climate change and halting the loss of biodiversity. At the same time, the food sector must guarantee food security and provide jobs in rural regions.

The European Organic Congress will demonstrate the capacity of the organic sector in contributing to EU sustainable development strategies and in reinvigorating the European food sector by enhancing competitiveness and creating jobs. It will also discuss the policy changes necessary to achieve sustainability in the food sector, starting with the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) which provides tools to shape farming to address future challenges.
