Indian NGO commits to save 54,750 plastic bags by 2011

11 June 2010. Last month SWAN&Man (Save-Wild-Atmosphere-Nature and Man), started a campaign to reduce consumption of the plastic carry bags, and encourage local authorities, farmers and milk producers to use environmentally friendly paper or cloth bags.

Sri Varadhashrama was chosen as the starting point of the campaign. It is a sacred religious place of the area, and a popular daily destination for thousands of devotees. SWAN&Man have engaged the authority of the area to stop the distribution of their gift in plastic carry bags by donating 10,000 cloth bags for their use, and encouraging to sign a resolution that “Ashram will never use plastic carry bags from May 2010″.

The campaign of SWAN&Man features numerous awareness raising, educational and promotional activities throughout the year which aim to reduce the consumption of 150 bags per day or 54,750 bags by May, 2011. The campaign also includes placing of banners, place cards and lectures of environmental scholars, social workers, politicians, and the students of all age groups. Thus, the initiative will help reduce the soil pollution, and the loss of land and marine biodiversity in the area.
