Brussels, 16 July 2008 – Biodiversity has many faces. The Photo Exhibition “Nature – Our Precious Web” shows dozens of them: elusive snakes from Guiana and plantations of eucalyptus, medicinal plants and a fish market in Russia’s winter.

This week the exhibition opened in the European Parliament in Brussels. Struan Stevenson – President of the Intergroup on Sustainable Development, Martin Meister – GEO Magazine, Camille Pisani – Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences, Nicholas Hanley – DG Environment, European Commission and Sebastian Winkler – Countdown 2010 led the opening ceremony and introduced this unique collaborative venture to representatives from numerous actors committed to the halt of biodiversity loss.

The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity, IUCN, Countdown 2010 Initiative, GEO magazine, UNDP and GTZ joined forces to illustrate the challenges of achieving the 2010 biodiversity target by displaying the link between biological diversity, human activity and the well-being of mankind. High-quality pictures by world-renowned photographers guide visitors towards a deeper understanding of the causes and effects of biodiversity loss by showing the beauty of nature and the impact human activities have on it. The high aesthetic level and emotional load of the pictures ensure the message is conveyed in its most powerful form and is a way to raise awareness of the urgency to act in implementing the EU’s Biodiversity Action Plan.

In August the exhibition will be displayed in Hamburg at the GEO Magazine Headquarters and will then continue its world tour to Barcelona at IUCN World Conservation Congress in October 2008 before getting to Japan in 2010.
