New tools for Biodiversity Indicators projects

29 May 2009. As we are getting closer to 2010, efforts towards the 2010 target are increasing at all levels.

The 2010 Biodiversity Indicators Partnership (2010 BIP), hosted by the UNEP-World Conservation Monitoring Centre, has recently relaunched its website. The website is a unique portal which provides comprehensive information on global biodiversity indicators and trends with an emphasis on reporting towards the 2010 Biodiversity Target. The website will be available in all six languages of the United Nations later in the year.

The 2010 BIP is a global initiative, funded by the Global Environmental Facility (GEF) that brings together over 40 international organizations to develop biodiversity indicators and assess biodiversity loss.

Streamlining European 2010 Biodiversity Indicators (SEBI 2010) has just published the first assessment report about progress towards 2010, based on a set of indicators developed within the initiative. You can download the full publication on the EEA website.

The SEBI 2010 process was started in 2005 to provide a streamlined set of biodiversity indicators for Europe. It does not create new monitoring or reporting obligations for countries, instead it aims to ensure consistency between biodiversity indicator sets at the national and international level.

Both the 2010 BIP and the SEBI 2010 are complementary to the Countdown 2010 Readiness Assessment.
