Nikon joins Countdown 2010
14 February 2008, Rome, Italy. “Nikon for Parks” is a pilot project to build business support for protected areas. The company along with the Italian Ministry of Environment, Land and Sea presented their commitment to Countdown 2010 at the meeting of the CBD Working Group on Protected Areas in Rome.
The project shows how business can assist in raising awareness for protected areas. Federico Cinquepalmi, Italian Ministry of Environment and Member of the Countdown 2010 Advisory Board noted that business involvement is critical for moving beyond the conservation community with our biodiversity message. Nikon aims to establish multi-functional photo centers that will provide technical equipment and training for photo shooting and bird watching, and host photo exhibits. Sebastian Winkler welcomed this commitment from Nikon as a contribution to Countdown 2010. Participants called on Nikon to spread this approach to other countries as a means to raise the awareness on protected areas to a larger public and to profile the initial results of this initiative at the World Conservation Congress in October 2008 in Barcelona.
