Vojvodina joins Countdown 2010
19 March 2008, Novi Sad, Serbia. The Assembly of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina adopted the Countdown 2010 declaration in its session today. The Assembly commits to increase afforestation of the region while taking into consideration biodiversity requirements; improve the protection of biodiversity in protected areas; promote good agricultural practices and organic production; protect valuable areas from negative impacts of industrial activities; support education and awareness raising in regard to biodiversity of local communities, civil society and protected areas managers.
Last week, the newest IUCN member in the region – Green Network of Vojvodina – and IUCN recommended the signature to the joint session of the Committee on Economy and Tourism, Committee on City planning and Environmental protection and the Committee on Agriculture.
After the first local community of Botos, the Assembly of Vojvodina is the regional authority joining Countdown 2010 in Serbia. The Province sets a good example for other regional and local authorities in the country and in the region.
