Yudl – Ay – EEE – Ooooo….Austrian youth signs for biodiversity!

21 November 2008, Vienna (Austria). Being the largest youth organisation for agriculture in Austria, Landjugend has a role to play in biodiversity protection. At the Landjugend Best Project Award Ceremony for 2008, Austria’s youth affirmed their active engagement to biodiversity by becoming partners of Countdown 2010.

With the signing of the Countdown 2010 Declaration, Landjugend Austria commits to use every opportunity to contribute to the halt of biodiversity loss and ensure significant steps to reach the 2010 biodiversity target. The Head of Countdown 2010, Sebastian Winkler – present at the ceremony – was delighted to welcome Landjugend as the largest non-environmental association to join Countdown 2010 in Austria. The commitment to biodiversity of these young people demonstrates their ability to focus on several issues and to act as an essential driver for bringing about change through real action on the ground.

The signing was one of the highlights of the Award Ceremony. The 2008 Best Project Award was assigned to Landjugend Styria (southeast Austria) for the „Helping Experience” project. Last summer, 21 local groups and 500 members volunteered for a total of more than 5,000 working hours in different aid programmes to implement the project.

The Best Project Award Ceremony is one of the many successful initiatives of Landjugend Austria to find innovative solutions in the field of agriculture, health and environment. This year, six provinces and eighteen counties took part in the competition.

Landjugend represents more than 90,000 members in Austria. The organisation focuses on education and is supervising the „aufZAQ” – a Europe-wide recognised course which, since 2008, includes biodiversity as a key topic.
