China Association for NGO Cooperation (CANGO) is a non-profit, membership organization operating nationwide. CANGO was founded in 1992 and registered with the Ministry of Civil Affairs (registration number 3340), and is audited according to Chinese laws. As of July 2007, CANGO has 137 member organizations. In July 2007, CANGO was granted special consultative status of the Economic and Social Council, United Nations.

Since its founding, CANGO has developed and maintains good relations with 160 foreign NGOs, bilateral, and multilateral organizations through its day-to-day operations. By the end of December 2006, CANGO raised RMB Yuan 335 million from 77 donor agencies for project implementation. The local matching fund has reached RMB Yuan 230 million. Almost 100 counties from 30 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities were involved in the projects.

Since 2000, CANGO has made great contribution to promote environmental conservation actively. CANGO organized a series of seminars, such as natural conserves, renewable energy, environmental governance and public participation, etc. carried out some campaigns such as “China Action on Earth Day”, “26℃ Energy Saving Action ”, “Green Commuting”. In addition, CANGO conducted “Planting and Sand-preventing” project in Fengning county, Hebei province, made great efforts to promote biogas, straw gasification and renewable energy in rural district.

The task and direction for CANGO will be to promote China’s civil society development and to provide an experience exchanging and information-sharing platform for Chinese NGOs. CANGO will continue its work in central and western China; environmental protection and civil society building, broaden the corporative channels between CANGO and government, business, and research institutes; and pay more attention to balanced development between economic and social.
