FutureGenerations, founded in 1992, is a non-profit educational institution that teaches and enables a process of equitable and sustainable community change in four countries: Afghanistan, China , India and Peru. The process of community change is designed to facilitate three-way partnerships between communities, government and non-government organizations and to scale-up successful community-based programs to the regional or national level.
FutureGenerations has worked in partnership with the Tibet Autonomous Region government, environmental agencies and local communities to foster and facilitate the emergence of a new pattern of nature conservation that protects nature and improves the lives of local people. Specifically, FutureGenerations/China provides both professional and local-level training and collaborates on the design and development of large-scale community-based conservation initiatives. More recently, FutureGenerations/CHINA, registered in Hong Kong in 2006, has partnered with Beijing Forestry University to initiate the Green Long March, a national event engaging students from 43 universities along 10 routes covering the major ecological zones in China. The purpose is to raise environmental awareness, identify and foster community-based change, and focus attention on environmental successes in China.
FutureGenerations work is founded upon global scholarship. In the early 1990s, FutureGenerations worked with two international task forces to investigate successful community change efforts worldwide. Based on these reviews, FutureGenerations has developed and formalized its education program by offering a Master’s of Arts Degree Program in Applied Community Change and Conservation since 2003.
