Nanjing Institute of Environmental Sciences (NIES)

The Nanjing Institute of Environmental Sciences (NIES) is a key technical provider for policies, legislation, action plans and technical guidelines on biodiversity conservation in China, with research areas in rural environmental protection, nature conservation and biodiversity protection. It is also the main advisor for the negotiation, implementation and monitoring of the implementation of the CBD in China. The NIES has produced many strategic advisory reports for the Chinese government and provincial governments. Since its founding in 1978, the NIES has undertaken and completed more than 600 research projects, including projects assigned by the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Finance and SEPA, and projects financed by the World Bank, UNEP and UNDP.

The NIES has published more than 1,000 papers in forums and academic journals at home and abroad and more than 50 books. The NIES has won more than 30 prizes at national, ministry and provincial levesl. There are 120 permanent staff, including 23 professors, 28 associate professors, more than 50 assistant professors, and more than 80 employed personnel. The NIES has one academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering. 10 research personnel enjoy “government’s special subsidy” from the State Council.

The NIES has established two key laboratories at ministry level. Main instruments and equipment include gas chromatography, atomic absorption spectrometers, liquid chromatography, ion chromatography, chromatography-mass spectrometer, water quality testing system, flow analyzer, geographic information system, computer network equipment, meeting system and many vehicles. The NIES has buildings of over 11,000 square meters. The Journal of Ecology and Rural Environment sponsored by the NIES is a core journal of China. The NIES has repeatedly been awarded “an advanced unit of SEPA” and “a civilized unit of Jiangsu Province” since 2001. The Nature Conservation Branch and the Environmental Criteria and Standard Committee of Chinese Society for Environmental Sciences, and the Ecological Protection Committee of China Association of Environmental Protection are attached to the NIES. Most research achievements of the NIES have been adopted by related authorities. The NIES plays an important role in scientific decision-making and effective management in the area of biodiversity conservation and sustainable utilization.
