Countdown 2010

Countdown 2010 goal

That all European governments and members of civil society, at every level, have taken the necessary actions to halt the loss of biodiversity by 2010

Countdown 2010

Tasty food and essential medicine, fresh air and clean water, protection from natural disasters and the pleasure of walking through a forest in spring time: Without biodiversity, our lives would look a lot more bleak and barren.

But at the same time as we are taking advantage of this natural wealth, we are wasting our assets: Recent studies showed that two thirds of ecosystem services worldwide are in decline and species become extinct at up to 1.000 times the normal rate. It is more important than ever that we reverse this trend.

Over the last few years a number of international agreements have promised to save biodiversity by 2010.

To support governments and other stakeholders in achieving the 2010 biodiversity target, Countdown 2010 combines efforts to save biodiversity within a powerful network of active partners, including governments, cities and regions, and civil society organisations. National platforms assess performance, create awareness and demand action. To join the alliance, every member commits to take specific steps to save biodiversity in its realm.

Life is ticking away, and it’s time to move from words to action.
