DEAR COUNTDOWN 2010 PARTNERS, DEAR READERS

The final countdown has started. In 20 days the current Countdown 2010 initiative will close at a dedicated event at the 10th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity in Nagoya, Japan. We have chosen a symbolic time for this event: 20/10 in 2010 at 20:10 in the evening.

At the event the winner of the Countdown 2010 Biodiversity Award will be announced by IUCN Ambassador Iruka, a popular Japanese singer. IUCN will also launch the new Countdown 2010 initiative starting in 2011. Below you will find more details.

To mark this important occasion we have started today a special “countdown”: each day from 1 October to 20 October some of the best success stories sent to us by Countdown 2010 partners will be posted on the website. Check the website daily and discover their great achievements.

This is the last newsletter from the Countdown 2010 Secretariat. Please note that after the event in Nagoya, no more Declarations will be accepted to join the current initiative.

Organizations interested in joining the new initiative should please get in contact with IUCN at the beginning of 2011 at office@countdown2010.net. More information on the initiative will be posted on the Countdown 2010 website in the next few weeks.

I would like to personally thank all Countdown 2010 partners and supporters for having made this initiative a success and in particular those partners who submitted the success stories.

I look forward to restarting the new intiative with you. See you in 2011!

Hans Friederich
IUCN Pan-European Regional Director

MADE IN COUNTDOWN 2010

It’s 2010 – a year of stock-taking for world governments and for the Countdown 2010 initiative. The 2010 Biodiversity Target was not reached but the thousands of biodiversity actions taken by Countdown 2010 partners are an important step towards the improvement of the status of biodiversity and the increase of public awareness.

Thousands of biodiversity actions all over the world have contributed to conserving biodiversity. These actions are a model for other communities, regions and countries. The initiative itself has served as a springboard for increased, and concrete, action beyond 2010. A renewed and enhanced phase of biodiversity conservation and awareness raising can now start.

A number of success stories have been selected out of nearly 1,100 partners. The Made in Countdown 2010 publication is a collection of 20 of the best success stories by Countdown 2010 partners which have helped to make a difference for biodiversity. The stories come from partners from Europe to Africa, from North America to South America, from Asia to Oceania. Examples of successful actions include adoption of protection measures, implementation of action plans, raising awareness and reduction of biodiversity impact.

The best achievement for biodiversity will receive the Countdown 2010 Biodiversity Award at the Countdown 2010 event in Nagoya on 20 October.

BIODIVERSITY NEEDS ALL OF US!

The Countdown 2010 Secretariat has gathered hundreds of biodiversity messages from people all over the world during 2010 – the International Year of Biodiversity. All the cards have been put together in large photo mosaics which will be displayed at the 10th Conference of the Parties in Nagoya, Japan in October 2010.

Biodiversity needs all of us and we all need biodiversity. People were asked to write their personal message on what biodiversity means to them and how to save it. Cards were collected from partners, participants at the European Commission’s Green Week 2010, and the website.

20/10/2010@20:10

Countdown 2010 will officially close at a dedicated event in Nagoya, Japan, at the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity summit. The Countdown 2010 event will take place on 20 October at 20:10 in the presence of partners and supporters, as well as senior representatives from IUCN, the CBD Secretariat and other biodiversity organizations.

A new initiative starting in 2011 will be announced at the event. Existing Countdown 2010 partners will be invited to join the new initiative. More detailed information will follow.

On 7 December the IUCN European Union Representative Office in Brussels will host a short event to celebrate the end of the initiative. Check the Countdown 2010 website to be updated with more information.

> More information will shortly be posted on the Countdown 2010 website.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER 2010?

The experience of Countdown 2010 has shown that there is a need for such initiatives like Countdown 2010. The number of organizations, local authorities, businesses and others who joined the network from all over the world has steadily grown over the years. Countdown 2010 partners have joined not only to share and promote their experiences, but also to become part of an international movement for biodiversity.

Although the initiative comes to an end in 2010, the biodiversity clock does not stop. Building on the success of the initiative, IUCN, the International Union for Conservation of Nature – which hosts the Countdown 2010 Secretariat – will launch a new initiative for 2011 and beyond.
