ECNC-European Centre for Nature Conservation

Commitments:

ECNC organizes and facilitates communication and public awareness programmes. It has achieved significant gains in the levels of involvement of regional and local authorities in Europe within the framework of the Countdown 2010. For instance, together with the Dutch Province of Noord-Brabant and Countdown 2010, ECNC promoted the involvement of a wide range of regions and municipalities in the Province of Noord-Brabant in biodiversity targets and challenges. In addition to that, ECNC implements projects on the impact of pressures like agriculture, climate change and the production of biofuels on Europe’s biodiversity, resulting in practical recommendations for policy and businesses. ECNC coordinates the process of putting the European ecological network on the map and facilitates interregional cooperation, for instance for the South-East Europe and the Black Sea area. It also works closely with the financial sector, for instance by setting up a European Biodiversity Finance facility in order to increase biodiversity-related investments. In Eastern Europe, ECNC facilitates the design of environmental micro-credit facilities as a means of making capital investment available for local entrepreneurs. ECNC also assists in developing business plans for pro-biodiversity businesses.
